Happy Independence Day
By: Karla Smith

Journaling : Well…..that has been my usual greeting my entire life. Really?.. What is Independence day to me?Hot Dogs, Hamburgers, Watermelon, Fireworks. My usual way of celebrating , Not thinking much past the food and decoration.Last Year while watching a fabulous Fireworks show with Rick and Anke ( Son and DIL) visiting home from Germany. The Show made you feel all warm and Fuzzy, as the Fireworks Danced in the sky to The Usual Patriotic songs We sing. Of course I cry every time I hear the song “ Proud to be an American“. It wasn’t until I looked to my left, and saw my Precious Sweet GERMAN, DIL with Tears Streaming down her face.. After the show ,still emotional she told me that , This was the most Beautiful Tribute to our Freedom she has ever seen. They don‘t do that in Germany. I actually felt ashamed that I took our Freedom and Independence for Granted. The beginning of this year I stepped into the reality of Independence and Freedom. My dear sweet Son was Deployed to Afghanistan, to fight in a War , That a lot of us question. Oh my… I found myself for these past 6 months kind of walking in a stupor. Hearing of daily Battles, trying to hold on to my Faith That God will keep him safe and return him home untouched. How could anyone return untouched having to do all , that these young men are required to do, so we could stay home and celebrate our Independence? We all have Changed. As the 4th approaches in a few days from now, I continue to pray as my Son will still be there. I know I will be Celebrating in a Whole New Way. Thank you God.Thank you MY SON, for your Service.

Just An Ordinary Day
By: Mia

Journaling: I may have lived in the DC area for four years and have celebrated the 4th of July numerous times with my American friends. I even know the words of most of America's patriotic songs even better than my own country's native songs. I gladly partake in all the festivities because I have the utmost respect and love for the USA. Some of my best memories are from my time there. But for me this holiday will always be just an ordinary day.

Our Fourth

By: Kimmi

Journaling: Although we were unable to make the trip to Destin this year, this is where we usually spend out Fourth of July weekends.  We have went for the last two years and were planning on it this year as well, however other trip plans got in the way (CHA..oops...my bad!)  At least now I know ahead of time to make sure I can plan to take both trips.  There's nothing like being on the beach right smack in the middle of summer.  Swimming in the ocean, barbequin' on the beach, and enjoying the few fireworks from a 14th floor balcony.

Hey guys!

Hope everyone has had a fabulous weekend!

So, how many of you have a favorite song? A song thats lyrics just speak to you? I think most everyone has a song, that when they heard it for the first time, felt like the singer was singing directly to them, or about them. This was the inspiration for challenge 15!

Our challenge this week comes from Kimberly. Her challenge is:

Make this your title/subtitle:

Our talented guest designer this week is Tessa Ann Watte!

A Bit About Tessa Ann:

Hi there! First of all…..My name is Tessa Ann Watté. I live in beautiful Bend, Oregon with my sweet husband, Steven of 8 years. Starting our family is the next chapter in our lives, so for now we have 2 fur babies, Mozart and Annie. They are great scrapping company. Ha!

I was introduced to scrapbooking 3 years ago, after I received a fun basket of brightly colored papers and stickers as a birthday present. That was it. I was immediately in love. Since that day this fun hobby has quickly become my personal outlet to express myself in a creative way and also preserve memories at the same time. I have been a part of Tinkering Ink, Junkitz, Piggy Tales and FiberScraps Design Teams, but recently have made the choice to create for myself again. Throughout my scrapping days, I have been published in several magazines which included writing articles and most recently my layout was featured on the cover of the Spring issue of Scrap booking & Beyond Magazine.

Over the last 2 years, I've started teaching classes locally in Bend, and this past year had the opportunity of traveling to teach a workshop at Scrapbook Vacation Clubs in Daytona Beach Florida. I also enjoy creating handmade whimsy-styled embellishments for my Etsy shop and more and more these days, this is what I am working on the most. I enjoy it so much!.

After five years of being unhappy, I decided it was time for a change - an end. An end to a marriage that I knew would never work. With a divorce behind me and a four month old, I never thought it would be possible to start over. I thought it would be the most difficult thing ever - and it was - until I met you. you gave me happiness, you gave me peace of mind, you gave me and BB love. You gave me a new beginning.

Journaling:

As quickly as we began, we ended. A sudden meeting & a sudden goodbye. We had so much in common but somehow it ended. I don’t think I realized how much I cared for you until we said goodbye. Which was probably why I was so hung up on you afterwards. Now I can see that maybe the reason we ended was because I was meant for someone else & a totally new beginning to a better life.

Adopting Elisha
By Sasha

Journaling:

In my story I dream so big at times I dream that one day I will have little girl of my own through adoption. It is my own story and my own reasons that I wish to share just some. I know there are many babies out there so many in fact I just want to give them all a home, Big Mama's House or something of my own .. I wish that I could have them all but the truth is I cant. I do not care where she is from, her nationality or religion. I want a daughter to raise and love. I would love a mother daughter connection, one that I never had with my own mother. I was going through the process while were were in Japan, and I started to late, time was not on my side, I could not get my extension approved to stay just to complete this dream, Naoko was her name, would I have changed it or would I have named her Elisha, the name I had already picked out for my daughter. Was it not meant to be, please say that is was meant to be and we just start the process to late. I had the money, I had the baby items already purchased. Well what also happened was she doing a bidding war with another American family and I still wanted her, I still wanted the baby no matter what. Regardless if her mom was being stupid and greedy for money.

Every new beginning comes from some other beginnings end

One day I will love a daughter of my own just as much and as equal as my two beautiful sons. One day my dream will come true, one day I will just settle down and open my charity that I want for abused and neglected children one day I will accomplish all these goals...there is not a moment that goes by that I do not think of Elisha there is not a day that goes by while in a store I look at baby "girl" clothes. I am meant to have a daughter I just know it .. and when that day happens I will be the happiest mother on earth, because my family of 4 will be complete.

Moving is stressful enough as it is. Then to add changing schools in the middle of the year…yeah let’s just say, we weren’t looking forward to it. I was worried about her. Worried about making new friends, getting into a new routine, just the changes in general. But it turns out, that was all for no reason. It was all for the better. She loved everything about it and where she once was hesitant to even go to her old school, we found her looking forward to it here. Such a good thing.

Challenge #14

Posted by The Design Experiment on 10:34 PM
Hey Experimenters!

Do you ever find yourself thinking on a Friday night..where did this week go? Do you ever find yourself on "auto-pilot"? Just coasting through the week? If you are like us, you rarely stop and appreciate the trivial things that happen throughout the day, stop and think about the little triumphs, or the little annoyances that make up your week. This week we challenge you to stop, at least once everyday for five days, and record your thoughts.

This challenge comes from one of our new DT members, Kinsey! This was her example prompt from her DT entry!

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about how my moo
d directly relates to the outcome and quality of so many different things…my day, my appearance, my attitude, my outlook. So, that being said, I thought it would be really interesting to actually *see* myself in the midst of these times. Since my mood is totally different from day to day, I am a woman after all, I challenge myself *and* you to take a self-portrait for 5 consecutive days. Self portraits can be a hassle, but this shouldn’t be. Just pop in the bathroom when you are moody (happy, sad, brooding…whatever it is!) and snap a quick shot of yourself. Be honest! No posing allowed. Keep it real.

For the journaling on th
is one, I want you to really hone in on what mood your were in. Why were you feeling those emotions at that time? How do you perceive yourself? Does your self image match the image you captured in the heat of the moment? PS. The journaling here can be as long or as short as you want it. For me, the pictures are what my focus is…capturing emotion through images. Have fun!!!

Here is Leah's Creation for Challenge #14:

All In A Week: By Leah Fung

Journaling:

Monday-Scrapbooking is truly a great way to start the week. I was having fun making projects for making memories, when I asked Drew to take my picture.
Tuesday-The worse thing about working three part time jobs, is that I don't have enough time to clean my home. On this day, I just got home from dropping the ki
ds at school. I had been awake since 4:30am. I went to the lab and worked from 5am to 7:30am and then headed back home to get the kids fed and dressed for school. After I dropped them off at school, I came home to: a dirty kitchen, a disaster of a family room, and piles of dirty laundry. It was so bad, it was almost funny.
Wednesday-Although exhausted from the last three days, (notice the bags under my e
yes?) I was very happy to have finished all my projects on time and accomplish my research goals for the week. I was so happy that I asked Alex to take a picture of me in my moment of triumph.
Thursday- I woke up Thursday still happy from the success of Wednesday. It was
unusual to wake up on a Thursday and not feel overwhelmed by all the unfinished work and looming deadlines. Before heading out to Paneras for a self-indulgent caramel latte and egg souffle, I ran into the bathroom and snapped this picture. I look goofy as usual, but hey, this is who I am.
Friday-It's not very often that I get a headache, but for some reason I got o
ne this week. I took the kids to see Kung Fu Panda (a great movie by the way!) We also did several errands. By late in the afternoon, I noticed a headache coming on and it lasted til early the next day. I asked Rob to take this picture of me when the headache was at it's worst. I'm just thankful I don't get headaches very often.

Wow, Leah! You are an inspiration to us all! Thank you so much for being our Guest Designer this week!

By Kinsey

Journaling:

1. Failure- creative block much? Yeah, today I pretty much sucked at life...not a good feeling. Just having one of those days where nothing is right and it all feels unbalanced.
2. Bloated & gross- Well, it's about that time, so naturally I'm crying about lame ads on tv and feeling bigger than usual and all around blah...times like these I tend to hole up and stay away from people in general. Oh well, it explains yesterday at least. ha.
3. Creative- I woke up this morning with tons of ideas. I'll forget most of them by noon but at least I've got mojo today :) It's days like these that keep me going. Love the creative vibe...that place where curiosity meets innovation to make something new and fresh. good.
4. Stoked- went to Green Tangerines today and completed all the paperwork, which means that I'm officially a teacher there! Such good news! Walking on sunshine right now...I even rolled down the windows and yelled lyrics to my fave songs on the way home. Just like a cheesy movie...haha.
5. Lazy- this one's gonna be short. I'm not feeling it. Total laziness right now. I'm having a hard time changing the channel. Yep. I'm in the mood to keep the couch company. All day.

Hi Everyone!

Our challenge this week is all about words. We use them everyday, to express our feelings, to communicate. Did you know that the average woman says 20,000 words a day? An average man says only 7,000! We ladies sure like to gab! Do you have words that you continuously say throughout the day? A Trademark phrase? Start thinking about it! Here is your challenge for week 13:

Words...we all have our favorites. What is YOUR favorite word and why? Does it have a particular meaning? Do you say it a thousand times a day?

We are so excited to have Rachel Carlson as our Guest Designer this week!

Rachel Says:

Hello, My name is Rachel. I'm a 30+something-year-old - hee, hee! OKAY, I'll be 40 this September and it's driving me INSANE! My husband and I just moved to a house that was built in 1910 with a new puppy to add to the fur count - affording me much to document in the way of scrapbooking!

I started scrapbooking five years ago, the proper way, and just last year crossed over to the digital side. And while I do still enjoy paper, I do like the challenges that digital allows me too.

I work at a fabulous scrapbook store where I also teach on occasion. I'm on a few design teams as well and enjoy the time I have spent traveling to tradeshows, meeting amazing people and learning the industry.

Thank you so much Design X for allowing me to be a guest designer. Your challenges are fabulous and I look forward to much more inspiration from all of you!

Love
By Mia

Journaling:

Being a hopeless romantic, it’s only natural for me to choose the word ‘love’ as my favorite. For me it has so many meanings, it is full of happiness but is equally intertwined with sadness. There are so many different kinds of love and that’s what I love about it. It’s so diverse yet so powerful. Love can bring people together and at the same time tear you apart. Love can be physical and materialistic. Love is greater than any one person. There is not a day that goes by that I don’t say it. In fact I say it several times a day, sometimes in private and other times out loud. I say it more to some people than to others. I am definitely not afraid to shout it out to the world. I guess it’s true what people say that “this is what makes life divine.”

************************************************************************************
Fuck
By Emily

Journaling:

It's a naughty word to some, and I'll admit I still can't say it in front of my grandma or mom, but I totally say Fuck more than any other word. What other word do you know that can express exactly what you need? What other word is a noun, verb, and adjective, all rolled into one delightfully crisp punctuation?! So, forgive my monstrous mouth, for I cannot help my love affair with this fabulous word!

************************************************************************************

Journaling:

Apparently I use the word seriously a lot! I guess I never noticed so I can't say why I do or why it has meaning to me. :) It just comes out! I mean... seriously!

************************************************************************************
Aggravated
By Kimmi

Journaling:

That I woke up too early this morning and couldn't fall back asleep. that my hair is taking forever to dry. that it just won't fix right. that I have nothing to wear. nothing that fits. nothing that's clean. that I can't find Brayden's left shoe. it just seems that's the one that always goes missing. that drivers on the interstate cannot drive. that my waitress is taking far too much time and being really rude. that Trav called and he now has to work extra late tonight. that the internet is way to slow. that my computer won't stop freezing. that Trav ordered pizza for dinner, which caused me to break my diet again. that there's no hot water left. that the house is a wreck. that no one is reachable. with cell phones, you'd think you could get in touch with who you're looking for - not. that that they just don't answer. aggravated- not necessarily my favorite word, but it's the word my husband says is my favorite. obviously I just get easily---->aggravated.

************************************************************************************
Love
By Sasha

Journaling:

One of my favorite words I use everyday is love. Its meaning is so sentimental and strong, I say it to my kids and husband at least 20x's a day. I need it, live it, breathe it.

Sammo
By Kinsey

Journaling:

If words could be ‘played out’, Sammo would *so* be retired by now. I must say it like a bajillion times a day. There’s a story behind the name…I didn’t always call Samuel ‘Sammo’. Nope, it took hold when Bri was about 3 years old. Her and daddy went through a rather endearing James Bond phase where it was all they watched. Sam’s full name is Samuel James Wilson and Bri asked about it one night while watching James Bond. Sam told her his full name so, naturally she started calling him “Sammo James Bond Wilson”. Well, it kinda stuck and I eve n latched on to it and called him Sammo Bond for the longest until that became a mouthful and now it’s just Sammo.

Seriously, it is one of my favorite words. Love him. Love Bri. Love that we make up words for eachother. We’re a fun group…Sammo, Nerdigan and Boogerloo. That’s us.

Mia Caniza

Mia Says:

Hi all! I'm Mia and I'm 29 years old. Born and raised all the way in the Philippines but used to live in the DC area during my college years, which I consider my second home. I am single, no kids but with an adorable little dog who is the princess of the house. I've always been artsy, having taken up art, architecture and interior design. So it was no wonder that I fell in love with scrapbooking. Well, fell in love is an understatement, it's more like I'm addicted. I discovered scrapbooking when I was looking for a unique gift to give in 2006 and the rest as they say is history. I love patterned paper and embellishments. I love mixing different manufacturers and colors to come up with something fun and unique. I love to layer papers and embellishments so that when you see my pages there is always something new to discover. I also love to hand cut and you will often see me cutting up paper to make new embellishments on my pages. I guess I would describe my style as full of color and details. I love to change things up so you will sometimes find romantic pages and other times bold & graphic styles as well. Even though I often like to change things up so as not to always have the same look, the bling and the flowers are not far away. I am so thrilled to be part of the TDX DT as I love these challenges. They force you to think and scrap outside your comfort zone yet leaving you the freedom to let your creativity and style still shine through. I am honored to say that TDX is my first DT spot. I am excited to get to work with such an amazing and talented group of ladies. I hope to inspire all of you to create and think outside of the box.

Amy Coose

Amy Says:

My name is Amy Coose, and I am a Texan transplanted to Northern Virginia. I have been married to the love of my life for almost 13 years, and we have two beautiful children. Austin is eight and just all boy, and my daughter Georgia is six. She will tell you she is a tomboy, and not a girlie-girl who would much rather play with snakes and dinosaurs than dolls. They are both the reason I scrapbook, and I love being able to create special memories for my family. I started scrapbooking when Austin was born, and haven't looked back. Scrapbooking is more than just a hobby for me-it's a way for me to save precious memories, be
creative, and do something meaningful. Outside of scrapping, I teach preschool 3 days a week.

We are soooooooooo lucky to have these uber talented ladies on this team! Be sure to check in on Sunday to see their first designs!!!

Thank you for all that you do! :) Talk, type, talk, type, talk, type, talk, type. Oh my sweet personal phone. :) We have been pals for many a years. You have gone through a lot of changes. So have I. But you have been constant. Always there when I need to call for help. Thank you!

She's My Constant
By Emily

Journaling:

She is the constant in my life. My mom. No matter what, she is always there for me. She always listens, even is she doesn't "get it", she listens. She is my biggest cheerleader, my biggest fan. She is my best friend.

Forever My Constants
By Dena

Journaling:

They are my constants. My mom and my sisters. Always there in the good times and bad. They always forgive, love, support and care. I couldn't ask for more. It has always been us girls, we have each other and that is so reassuring. They are my constant in life. My family.
